Gaia Magazine

Gaia, named for the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, is a magazine created for an adventurous and environmentally-conscious audience. The wordmark and visual system capture subtle elements of nature, like the beautiful textures, colors, and shapes that are all around us, while distilling them to their simplest form. The magazine’s three tenets are “enjoy, explore, protect,” and will help to structure the content and imagery.

I explored several concept directions for the magazine's wordmark: globe, nature/foliage, and mountains/adventure. The mountains/adventure concept was chosen and I decided to refine the mark that used abstract lines and shape to communicate various nature elements. The final mark is a combination of Futura and LL Brown typefaces, seamlessly combined to create an ownable and memorable design.
